It is not too complicated of a swap, so you should be able to save yourself a nice chunk of change by not taking it to the dealership to be done. A new engine could run you anywhere from $2,000-$4,000+. You could find a rebuilt or salvage engine from around $1,500. I'd say probably about another $1,000-$2,000 to have it installed.

Bring it to a shop & get an estimate.

JJ: 1. The Ford V8s of the 80s were & r very fuel efficient & clean running.

2. To waste an existing car, & manufacture a new one has more impact on the environment than the 5 mpg difference, than say, the highway mileage of the 85 Town Car & a 08 Lexus ES (22 vs. 27)

In fact, an 85 Town Car is more efficient than the most comparable version of the Toyota Sequoia (4.7L V8, 2WD), which gets 17 highway vs. the Lincoln is 22.

Even a 2008 Town Car, only gets 1 MPG better than the 85. The reason is that while engine technology has progressed, at the same time cars r much heavier these days with all the safety equipiment (a gazillion airbags, etc.)
