The following excerpt is copied from ur online owners manual (page 228) >>>>>>>>>COPY<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Octane recommendations Your vehicle is designed to use “Premium” unleaded gasoline with an (R+M)/2 octane rating of 91 or higher for optimum performance. The use of gasolines with lower octane ratings may degrade performance. We do not recommend the use of gasolines labeled as “Premium” in high altitude areas that r sold with octane ratings of less than 91. Do not be concerned if ur engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if it knocks heavily under most driving conditions while u r using fuel with the recommended octane rating, see ur dealer or a qualified service technician to prevent any engine damage. >>>>>>>>>>END COPY<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Open the glove box, pull out the manual. See what it says there? 91 octane. That is premium.

91 octane is recomended, although l use 87 most of the time, and unless you drive it hard, it works just fine.

During the summer, l alternate between fillups of 87 followed by 91. during the cooler weather, l stick with 87-89 depending where l am. l never carry a heavy load in the car and the arent too many highmountains or steep gradients in New Jersey, so no knock!!

It really depends on the model, but you should always try to stay with premium gasoline when you have a high-performance or a V8 automobile. The LS should use premium, but if you are in a pinch, it is the one 01 Lincoln that can probably use the cheaper stuff. Just make sure that it is a good brand of gas, pref. Mobil/Exxon or Shell. Cheap ''premium'' gas is worse than good-quality regular gasoline.
