Oh boy. l have a new mechanic since l moved. He is not bad, but... theconstant, whistling ''whoo'' sound that started 2 months ago in winter from my engine is not gone yet. He is claiming that it is the natural sound of the alternator charging as the engine runs (he put it in in January.)....but l do not think so! It did not make that sound starting in January...it began in APRIL. Every time l listen its NOT coming from the new alternator area.. It is coming from WITHIN the front of the engine. Is this a bearing problem, and what should l do ?

First get a new mechanic and second, get a new mechanic. no it should not make the noise and as you said it was not making the noise before so its not normal.

If it is making the whoo, or whoot type noise only at idle, or near idle & goes away when the engine speed is up, put ur hand on the outside of the air cleaner box when it is doing it, if u can feel it rumbling, u idle speed control motor is sticking & need to be replaced.
If it is this type of noise, it is a loud noise that can carry.
If it does it all the time the engine is running, l would find another mechanic to check it out, by removing the drive belt & start the engine, see if the noise goes away, then u can check the other pulley's,water pump,etc to see where the noise is coming from...

Whistling noise is not normal. They have been known to blow out the vaccum line to the PCV valve. When this gets bad enough, it will cause the check engine light to come on with lean DTC's. l would look there first. A idle air control motor cause cause a whistling noise too, more dependent on what model Lincoln.

You did not say what kind of vehicle & such for more help.

I'd do like the others & recommend seeing another shop, preferably a Ford/lincoln/Mercury dealer.

I've seen alternators after a few months start making noise by themselves from the bearings & other stuff. But if u say this is not it, we may look elsewhere.

But depending upon the motor, Ford has had issues with a whistling sound from either a air leak or in some cases on older lincolns like the town cars, of it coming from the idle speed motor (to which a bulletin was issued informing dealers to install a new style tube to fix the concern).

Some others will set up a harmonic that will resonate in the air box of the car & will change if u remove the air cleaner assy.

My vote is to bring it to another shop for a second opinion.
