l have a 4.6 liter engine.98,000miles.The alternator or air conditioner compressor, or power steering pump or belt tension has never been changed..l hear a grinding noise near front of engine..Used a plastic pipe to try to find the noise.Can not find it.l see some shining flakes around the radiator fan.Where is the problem?

Remove the drive belt, and try spinning each accessory by hand. If you feel any play in any of the accessories, or unsmooth ''feel'' in the way it spins, that is the source of the grinding sound you hear.

ford girl is correct dont forget to hold the water pump puley still while rotating fan only to check fan clutch if turning the pulleys does not show any thing

It sounds like the cooling fan is hitting the radiator or shroud or support at certain throttle settings. It might be worn motor (engine) mounts allowing your engine too much freedom of movement.

l would go with the cooling fan also, especially if the sound comes & goes. It is a rotating part that has a failing bearing or indeed the fan coming in contact with the shroud. be VERY careful with blades of the fan, they r extremely sharp & the fan can come on even with the car shut off. You might want to try a mechanic is stethoscope instead of the pipe before removing the serpentine belt.
Also, if the sound is worse in cold weather & screeches at times, it is the tensioner pulley for sure. Good luck.
