My Lincoln is not driveable right now because of a loud banging noise from the bottom of the engine. My suspician is that the Rod is blown. If this is so, should l have a used engine installed to replace it or is it cheaper to just just repair the bottom end?

Replace the engine.

Call around. A rebuilt engine would probably be the way to go. When they go in to repair it, you are not only paying for all the new parts but alot of labor. Cheaper to find a good price on a rebuilt one and just pay for the installation. Remember, you can buy it at one place and have the mechanic of your choice install it.

As the other two have posted, REPLACE the engine. You are better off replacing it with a rebuilt engine. If the cost of a rebuilt engine is too high for your budget, you should have no difficulty locating a good quality used engine, since the 4.6L Romeo engines are a dime, a dozen. Now would be the time to install the updated intake manifold with the aluminum coolant crossover, in order to save on future repairs. Hope this helps.

Have the flywheel inspected l have seen a cracked one sound exactly like a bad rod bearing.
