Sounds like you are way out of your depth there because you are having difficulty describing the many problems. Get one of your engineer friends to have a look at it.

l own a shop, & live in N.C too. l am on the other end of the state, up by Asheville. l know u talk about a cheap rebuilt engine, but what l would consider (since u have a baby on the way) is to contact a junk yard that is on the ''hot line''. See if u can find a good used engine, with low miles on it. It will fit right in, & comes with a warranty. Rebuilt engines r just as good as the person who rebuilt it. l build a lot of race engines, & l can be honest with you. Most of the rebuilt engines give more problems than a good used one. You should have no problem finding one with 30,000 miles, or less on it out of a wrecked car. l am not sure l understand what u r talking about, the way u r describing ur problem. Most shops wo not charge anything to tell u what it would cost to fix it. It might be a lot less than u think. It may not even be a bad engine, but have someone look at it right away. Before u go to any shop, ask around with neighbors, friends, or a parts store where u do business, & l am sure u will come up with a shop that does good honest work. Do not let them know u know very little about cars, or this opens the door for them to take advantage of you. The less u say the better off u are, just ask what the problem is, & how much to fix it, & leave it at that. If they ask u what u do for a living, tell them u r an attorney, & they wo not even think of trying to mess u around. No one can take advantage of you, if u do not open a door for them to use. If u were up this way, l would look at it for you, but it would not make it that far!
Glad to help out, good Luck!!!
