what does the smoke smell like? perhaps oil? exhaust? rubber?

The smoke could be a leaking valve cover gasket and the oil is dripping on the exhaust manifold. The jerking could be worn U-joints, bad wheel bearings, a rear end problem with the gears. That is the best guess l can give. Probably need to take it in and have a mechanic look at it, he could give you a better idea of the problem and the cost to repair.

The car is old it does not take a experince mechanic to figure this out its a old car and its probably seen its best days. With out seeing the car no one can tell you exactly what is wrong l would say it will cost more to fix then its worth and you are going to have more problems so just get rid of the thing.

Here is a few things they might help u out.

The smoke might be caused by a worn out valve cover seal as mentioned previously. That is cheap to replace. Which is causing oil to spill onto a hot part of the engine, causing the smoke. The 5.0L engines usually require new seals after the 150K mark & r usually bulletproof otherwise with regular maintenance.

As for the buckling & jerking my bet is on replacing the wheel bearings on ur differential, which is inexpensive to do on the live axle rear suspension. If u start seeing smoke coming out of the rear wheelwell, then l suggest u take care of this issue immediately to avoid further damage to other suspension components.

Overall as reliability goes, these vehicles r easy to work, the parts r inexpensive, extremely safe & with little maintenance can go a long way. This is the reason why for years taxi companies & police departments have racked up miles with this platform.

Hope this helps..
