Here are the phenomena, could anyone help me sort out what is going on?
1. When l turn the key, you hear a ''click'' and all the interior lights and indicators turn off. No power at all.
2. l disconnect the battery terminors and reconnect them, the battery power is back. But, if l try to start the car again, it will die again.
3. The battery is 12.6V/14.4V depending on whether the alternator is on or off, and the current is 1000/850 mA.
4. l can jump sart the car every time with a hand-carry battery (12.8V) in my trunk.
My question is, if l can jump start the car, why can not l start the car? I've replaced the battery, polished the battery terminals with sandpaper, connected the battery negative pole to the engine with a thick cable...nothing happened. So, please let me know if you have any idea of what is going on! This is a 98 lincoln town car with 480K miles on it (used to be a service car). Thanks!

if you have the cable clamps, those tend to choroid up, l have a set that you slide the wire in then tighten down on the two bolts, if that is what you have undo the wire and try hitting it with wire brush. and maybe you might need a little bigger battery. l know about the tryin to start it and then it goes dead, my 2000 ford ranger did that and it was the battery cable wire ends.

start the car with the jumper, connect it to the terminal of the battery only ,,,if it start,,,remove jumper ,,turn off car then start,,
put your volt meter on top of the battery terminal while somebody star it,,not on the cable,,,should be 12+ if you have a loose connection,,below 8 your battery is dead

Positive battery cable is corroded inside of the cable end, near the terminal.
