Reach down and pull the release and put toe of foot under and pull up if it goes out then the spring is weak or disconnected. Fit it and there you go.

If it is a Town Car (and Continental l believe) there is no release to pull.

Put the car in Drive, then stick ur foot under the Parking Brake & try to pull it up.

l do not know about the Mark VII--and l used to have one! l think it has the automatic release as well. If not, pull the release & stick ur foot under the Parking Brake & pull it up.

Of course do this with ur left foot, & keep ur right foot on the service brake while the car is in Drive!

Besides trying to pull up on the e-brake pedal, u might want to check the switch that pedal hits when u apply it. If the pedal does not come away completely from the switch, or the switch sticks in the depressed position, it will cause ur light to come on. Check also the fluid level & have the pads & rotors inspected. A warning light will come on for low fluid level, which could be caused by a leak somewhere. The light may also come on if part of ur braking system has failed. The switch & fluid levels u can check by yourself very easily. If u have experience with replacing pads, u can check them yourself, also. Otherwise, take the vehicle to a local, reputable repair shop, & have them inspect the system. A lot of times, they will inspect for free.

l was told from a good source that if all fluids r full, filters have been changed, then u r probably a-ok. l have a 96 Ranger & the check engine light keeps coming on. l took it in & was told its a glitch & they reset it. Just anoying. There r sensing units inside the exaust pipe on some models that tell ur engine how much fuel mixture to mix. l had one replaced the other day & sure enough, my check engine went out. Now, its back on. Try taking ur battery cable loose, the neg. side & tighten it back. This resets it. Also, a faulty gas cap may need replaced. A bulb may be out somewhere, this can cause it to. If in doubt, consult a good mechanic.

l suggest first of all check to be sure the brake fluid is full. if the light is not caused by that it may be the e-brake pedal or switch sticking, if that does not do it try shutting the car off. Let it sit for a couple of minutes. Push the brake pedal down & take note how far it travels. Release it & repush it emmediately, Does it go to the same spot or does it stop sooner than the first time? If it does not travel as far the second time try having ur brakes bled for air in the system. Air in the brake system will trigger the auto proportioning valve wich will turn the light on. Good Luck.
