If it is a 2006, it has the 6-speed automatic transmission, if l remember correctly. There is a chrome trim bezel ring that surrounds the ''PRNDL'' indicator on the console. Simply pry up gently on this trim piece to remove. Once removed, there should be a slot where a key can be inserted to enable Releasing the shifter from the PARK position. To do this, u must insert the key into the slot, & releasing it from the PARK position at the same time. Tell ur sister to bring it in to ur nearest local Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer to have the shifter assembly replaced at once, since it should be covered under warranty. This is a pretty common problem with these 2006 & newer Explorer/Mountaineer/Expedition/Navigator models. Hope this helps.
