My 1999 Lincoln Town Car makes the gas pump cut out every gallon or so.It acts like the car is full, but it isn't.It spews gas out all over the place.

probably just air lock from the tank, my ranger does that too, nothing to worry about, just hold the handle insead of letting it go auto, and hold the handle about half way, seems to work for me, and Ford is bad for that, l had the same thing happen when l was filling up a customers car

some cars tanks are built not to take gas fast.this prevents from putting tank on auto and causeing a spillage.

A defective nozzle. They are designed to cut the flow when the vapor pressure backing into them from a filling tank reaches a certain level. That your nozzle is cutting off means the trigger that shuts it off is defective. Your car is fine.

If it is hot, pressure from inside the tank could be causing the pump to stop, and gas to bubble over a bit. Put the nozzle in a little bit just to let some of the pressure out, and finish pumping. You also have to make sure the nozzle is all the way into the filler neck when you start pumping, sometimes it will stop when you do not have it in far enough.

You are pressing the handle of the pump too hard. Slacken up on it and the gas will go in more slowly and get rid of the air.

Try holding the gas nozzle at a slightly different angle. l used to have a car like that. such that l could not leave the gas nozzle in the hole on auto. It would kick off. But, If l turned the handle just a little and lifted it the thing ran until full.

If you can not find an angle with yours that works, you may have a blockage. Someone dumped junk in a friends gas filler one time and he managed to dig it out after dropping the gas tank.

One thing make sure the key is off. If on it will not allow ther vapor to escape the fuel tank during refueling. After that check for blockages in the Evaporative Emission System. Evap Sys is to recycle the fuel vapors to the intake while driving. l have heard of issues of this type on Crown Vic, Marquis and Town Cars, but do not remember what the common cause was.

Do not put the gas in so fast. The nozzle is designed to detect back pressure in order to cut off when the tank (neck) is almost full therefore preventing spills. When filling the tank too fast the nozzle detects a back pressure and cuts off. This is a normal action. If you want to have some fun, try filling a tank with diesel fuel. The diesel fuel foams us so much you start getting ''cutoff'' at about 1/2 tank. Pops

You have a valve down the filler neck, its probably stuck. The valve closes when the vechile is upside down like in a car accident.
