Sounds like your fuel pump is not working but difficult to tell from your description.

low oil or coolant?

OK OK I've been called an idiot for saying low oil but a $50.00 tow to a repair shop where l rode along and watched the mechanic and ALL he did was put in 2 quarts of oil and the Gawd Damn thing started and runs fine to this day. The mechanic only charged me $12.00 for the oil and his time. THE ONLY REPAIR TO THE VEHICLE WAS 2 QUARTS OF OIL. Call me an idiot if you like.

Oh by the way, how many cars are up on blocks in your front yard?

If it runs as long as you hold the starter engaged, but shuts down when you let the key go to the ''run'' position, it could be your ballast resistor. What is the make and year of the car? Can you be more specific about what it does?

Could be the fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter. If the filter is clogged, it does not allow enough gas to reach the engine.

It could also be that the idle of the engine is too low. If it is too low, it does not keep the engine running.

How old is ur car? If it is an older car, it might have a carburetor. The carburetor can get clogged, or it could get flooded with too much gas. Do not press on the gas pedal before u start the car. It could be getting too much gas.

You could also have a clogged fuel line. Not enough gas getting to the engine to keep it running.

Some of these responses are so ridiculous l guess people answer them for points, low oil would have nothing to do with it what a idiot. You did not say what type of car or the year which makes a big difference because of computer controls and fuel injection and all that stuff. A tune up maybe needed, fuel filter maybe, a bad sensor, fuel injectors need cleaning, just take it to a mechanic.

low oil would not cause this, l would start by checking throttle body and air control valve for carbon or soot build-up,if cleaning these items does not take care of it check your fuel psi and ignition system

might be the timing

you might have a dirty/clogged fuel filter, dirty air filter, worn spark plugs, or dirty fuel injectors just to name a few. The first thing l would check and replace is the fuel filter.

Start at the lower priced things first, you dont want to replace the fuel pump if all you needed was a filter.
